AMD has gained some ground on Intel during the last 12 months, according market research firm iSuppli. Despite a few setbacks, the company saw their overall market share rise by 2.2 percent in the first quarter of 2008 compared to the same quarter a year ago. This built up their share of the market to 13 percent.
While the overall market continues to be unquestionably dominated by Intel, their sales did suffer a slight 0.7 percent drop compared to last year, bringing their share of the market down to 79.7 percent. About half of AMD's gains came at the expense of Intel, according to the report, with the remainder coming from smaller suppliers.
So are we witnessing a change in AMDs fortunes? Perhaps its too early to tell, as short-term figures give a slightly different picture. Although Intels market share dropped faintly in the last year, their first-quarter numbers represented a 1.2 percent rise over Q4 2007 while AMD dropped 1.1 points on the same period. Regardless, any news of market growth will certainly be welcome to AMD which hasnt been on its best financial shape lately.
